relax is an alliance between marie-antoinette chiarenza, daniel hauser and daniel croptier, which has existed since 1995. Before that chiarenza & hauser had been working together as a duo since 1983. They are noted for making such declarations as "thinking alone is criminal" (1991) and "artists are no flags" (1993). daniel croptier has a background as an urbanist. He believes that there is no price for art. He also demands a 300% price increase. the members of relax live and work in Switzerland.

for sale - a Public Art Project, a Show, a cd-rom and a webproject

The Art History Department of Dartmouth College and the Hood Museum of Art have invited the artists group relax to work on a public art project and on a show. relax conducted on-site studies in October 1998 and in May 1999. Their research provided the basis for a project in four parts, each of which can function autonomously but which are all interrelated through a network of mutual references. "for sale" has been designed, among other things, to demonstrate the heterogeneous and multi-layered character of Dartmouth College. The goal is to enhance existing connections between college institutes and departments as well as establishing new points of reference among college, museum, and public and private life within and outside the college framework.

A Lighting Installation on the Dartmouth College Green

The Green, central to Dartmouth College historically speaking, is an open rectangular area that might be considered the symbolic heart of the campus. Thus, the Green might be seen as embodying the identity of the college or as the surface on which is projected this identity. This is the site of annual ceremonies, honoring the tradition of Dartmouth. Pragmatically speaking, for most people the Green is a place to walk on, to get together, and to get from one place to another. The lighting installation entails training floodlights on all the elements around the Green (trees, buildings, benches, trash-cans, buildings). The lighting is in color (green, red, pink, blue, yellow).

A Video Installation in the Hood Museum of Art

A photo- and video installation has been created for the Cheatham & Friends Gallery. The walls of the three spaces have been completely covered with photographic c-prints. Visitors to the Gallery may have the impression of standing somewhere in an unknown place of the Green. Around 25 TV consoles, as found in some hotels, are distributed throughout the gallery. Some monitors show different stories, some monitors are connected to the TV-cable-network. The video-stories are based on interviews conducted at Dartmouth, on stories told by persons living on the Campus, in Hanover or in the near region, and on relax-impressions. The main theme of the video stories is: what if both the Green of the Dartmouth College and the Hood Museum of Art would be bought by an investment company which plans to transform the two areas into a fun- and theme-park?

The CD-ROM provides a record of the project, contains two games, two screen-savers, several videos, slideshows and soundscapes. The CD-ROM has been produced and issued by the artist and media-designer Laurent Schmid and his label activeRat.
